ROLEX GMT MASTER II PEPSI 126710BLRO
ROLEX GMT MASTER II PEPSI 126710BLRO
The story of the Pepsi Rolex begins in 1954 with the launch of the Rolex GMT-Master 6542, at a time when transcontinental air travel was rapidly expanding. This surge in global travel created a growing need for a watch tailored to the demands of pilots and frequent travelers. The GMT-Master addressed this need by introducing a groundbreaking feature: a 24-hour hand and a rotating bezel. By adjusting the bezel to the local time, the 24-hour hand could display a second time zone, making it an essential tool for navigating across multiple time zones. Known for its iconic two-tone red and blue bezel, the Rolex GMT-Master Pepsi also allowed travelers to easily distinguish between daytime (red half) and nighttime hours (blue half) at a glance.
The Pepsi Rolex gained even more fame in 1964 with its appearance in the iconic James Bond film Goldfinger. In the movie, the character played by actress Honor Blackman sports a men's Rolex 6542 Pepsi GMT-Master. The moment the watch appeared on screen, it became an instant sensation, captivating watch enthusiasts and solidifying its place as an iconic timepiece in pop culture.
Throughout its six-decade history, the Pepsi Rolex has undergone numerous updates, yet it has always maintained its striking and distinguished colorway:
- The first model of the Rolex GMT-Master 6542 was in production from 1954 to 1959. It featured a blue and red bezel made of Bakelite, a synthetic resin. However, two years into production, Rolex switched from Bakelite to anodized metal bezels due to the former's susceptibility to cracking.
- In 1959, Rolex introduced the second model of the collection, 1675, which went on to have one of the largest production runs in Rolex history, lasting until 1980. This model also marked the first time a Rolex sports watch was made available with both the Jubilee and Oyster bracelets.
- Rolex replaced the 1675 with the 16750 in 1981, which remained in production until 1988. This new version featured a quickset date, allowing the date to be set independently from the hour hand. Additionally, water resistance was improved, nearly doubling that of its predecessors, reaching 100 meters (300 feet).
- In 1989, Rolex launched two new models simultaneously: the 16700 (GMT-Master) and the 16710 (GMT-Master II). The key difference between the two was that the GMT-Master II allowed both the GMT hand and the hour hand to be set independently, enabling the tracking of a third time zone. The 16700 remained in production until 1999, while the 16710 continued until 2007.
- To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the GMT-Master line, Rolex introduced the more robust "Super Case" and the Cerachrom ceramic bezel in 2005. However, it wasn’t until 2014 that the ceramic bezel was introduced in the iconic Pepsi colorway with the 116719BLRO. This new Pepsi Rolex was crafted in 18k white gold, rather than the previously used stainless steel, surprising many fans and collectors.
- Finally, in 2018, Rolex introduced the long-coveted modern Pepsi Rolex in stainless steel with the 126710BLRO and discontinued the 116719BLRO. This newer model is nearly identical to its white gold predecessor, except for one notable difference: Rolex chose to pair it with a Jubilee bracelet, specially created for the 126710.
