ROLEX WIMBLEDON DIAL
The Wimbledon Championships, the oldest tennis tournament in the world, began in 1877 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, a town in southwest London, England. Known as one of the most prestigious, if not the most prestigious, tournaments in tennis, Wimbledon is held annually and is one of the four Grand Slam events, alongside the Australian Open, French Open, and US Open. Each year, 128 players compete in both men’s and women’s singles, with the tournament concluding in a final where two remain to battle for the title of champion.
Since Wimbledon is the most renowned tournament in tennis, it only makes sense that Rolex, the most prestigious watch brand, became the Official Timekeeper of Wimbledon in 1978. This marked the beginning of Rolex’s dominance in the tennis world, as the brand now sponsors all four Grand Slam events.
Not only does Rolex sponsor the tournaments, but they also sponsor top players, most notably former tennis star Roger Federer. Federer, the first man to win 20 Grand Slam singles titles, has a career that stands as a testament to remarkable success. In 2001, Rolex partnered with Federer, and their collaboration has continued ever since. This lasting partnership highlights Rolex’s unwavering dedication to excellence.

Other Rolex male ambassadors include Carlos Alcaraz, the 2024 winner of Wimbledon and the French Open, and Jannik Sinner, the 2024 winner of the Australian Open and the U.S. Open. Sponsoring all four Grand Slam events and the two winners of those Grand Slam tournaments demonstrates Rolex’s dominant influence in tennis. They also have partnerships with rising stars, including 22-year-old American Ben Shelton and 18-year-old Brazilian João Fonseca. On the women’s side, Rolex sponsors Polish tennis player Iga Świątek and American tennis player Coco Gauff. Both women are currently ranked in the top 5 of the Women’s Tennis Association world rankings.

In 2009, Rolex introduced the “Wimbledon” dial on the Rolex Datejust II, which was later carried over to the Datejust 41. Although Rolex never officially named the dial “Wimbledon,” it was Rolex enthusiasts who coined this term. The slate grey watch face and black Roman numerals outlined in green closely resemble the court clocks used during the games. Additionally, this model has been closely associated with the Wimbledon tennis tournament in its promotion.
